Description
Common Name: Otterbush (also known as River Star or Otterbossie)
Scientific Name: Gomphostigma virgatum
Description
Gomphostigma virgatum is a graceful, evergreen South African shrub with slender, flexible silvery-gray branches and narrow, elongated gray-green leaves. It forms a neat, vase-shaped bush reaching 1.5–2.6 m tall and produces abundant spikes of delicately fragrant, creamy-white flowers from late spring through fall. Ideal for adding soft texture and movement to garden borders, pond edges, or large containers.
Growing Conditions
Light: Full sun to light partial shade; flowers best in full sun.
Water: High water needs; keep soil consistently moist to wet. Regular irrigation is essential — thrives at pond edges or in boggy conditions but tolerates average moisture once established.
Soil: Well-draining yet moisture-retentive; prefers heavy, fertile loam or clay. Adapts to most soil types as long as it stays moist.
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions; hardy to light frost (down to around 0°C / 15°F) and will often re-sprout from the base if top growth is damaged by cold.
Humidity: Tolerates a range of humidity levels; enjoys moist air near water features.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring; mulch with compost to keep roots cool and nourished during hot periods.
Why We Love Them
We love Otterbush for its elegant, willow-like grace combined with tough resilience — it brings soft silvery movement and clouds of sweetly scented white flowers that attract pollinators, all while thriving happily with “wet feet” beside ponds or streams. Its fast growth and ability to bounce back from pruning or light frost make it a rewarding, low-fuss favorite that adds year-round structure and charm to water-wise or wetland-style gardens.
