Description
Dwarf Papyrus
Cyperus haspan
Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT
Full sun to partial shade; thrives in 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily
WATERING
Keep constantly wet or waterlogged; grows naturally in shallow water up to 10 cm deep. Water daily in summer, less in winter but never allow to dry out
SOIL TYPE
Heavy clay or loamy soil that retains moisture; can grow directly in pond mud or boggy conditions with pH 6.0-7.5
TEMPERATURE
10–35 °C; frost tender and will die back below 5 °C
HUMIDITY
High humidity above 60%; benefits from growing near water features or in naturally humid microclimates
FERTILISING
Monthly during growing season (September to March) with half-strength liquid fertiliser or slow-release aquatic plant pellets
GROWTH RATE
Fast; establishes rapidly in ideal conditions and can spread 30-40 cm per season via rhizomes in wet soil
MATURE SIZE
0.4-0.8 metres tall x 0.3-0.6 metres spread
Indoor Suitability
Can be grown indoors in bright, indirect light if kept in a water-filled container or with consistently wet soil. Requires high humidity and regular misting to thrive, making it more suitable for sunrooms or conservatories than standard living spaces.
Did You Know?
Unlike its famous relative the Egyptian papyrus, Cyperus haspan’s stems are triangular rather than round, and indigenous healers in KwaZulu-Natal traditionally used the plant’s rhizomes to treat stomach ailments and as a poultice for snake bites.
