Description
Cayenne Pepper – Growing Conditions
Botanical Name: Capsicum annuum (Cayenne Group)
Common Name: Cayenne Pepper
Plant Type: Annual/Perennial (short-lived perennial in warm climates)
Light Requirements
Cayenne peppers thrive in full sun. Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for strong growth and maximum fruit production. Plants grown in too much shade will become leggy and produce fewer peppers.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruiting. Water deeply when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering and waterlogged conditions, as peppers dislike “wet feet.” Mulching helps maintain even moisture.
Soil Requirements
Plant in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost. Ideal soil pH: 6.0–6.8.
Cayenne peppers perform well in garden beds and large containers with quality potting mix.
Temperature & Climate
Cayenne peppers prefer warm weather and grow best in temperatures between 21–29°C. Protect plants from cold winds and frost, as they are extremely frost-sensitive.
Humidity
Moderate humidity is ideal. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced or slightly high-potassium fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it promotes leaf growth at the expense of fruit.
Growth Habit & Size
Compact, bushy plants reaching 45–60 cm tall and 30–45 cm wide, depending on growing conditions.
Flowering & Fruit
White flowers develop into long, slim peppers that mature from green to bright red. Cayenne peppers are known for their heat and strong flavour.
Harvesting
Harvest when peppers turn fully red for best flavour and heat. Regular picking encourages more fruiting.
Uses
Ideal for cooking, drying, and making chilli flakes or powder.
