Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun exposure ensures the most compact growth and the best flowering display.
WATERING: Requires moderate, regular watering during its establishment phase. Once the root system is mature, it is relatively water-wise and can withstand moderate dry periods.
SOIL TYPE: Prefers well-composted, moist, but well-draining soil. It is very adaptable and performs reliably in the varied soil conditions of the Western Cape.
TEMPERATURE: Highly resilient; it is both frost-resistant and heat-tolerant. Its sturdy, leathery foliage makes it a top choice for wind-prone or coastal gardens.
FERTILISING: A light application of balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring is sufficient to maintain its glossy appearance.
GROWTH RATE: Moderate. It grows at a steady, manageable pace, allowing it to maintain its shape for longer periods without the need for constant pruning.
MATURE SIZE: Can reach 3–4 metres in height and spread, but it is easily kept as a smaller, neat hedge through occasional trimming.
Suitability
While not indigenous to South Africa, this Mediterranean native is perfectly acclimated to our local conditions. It is best suited for outdoor life, serving as an excellent evergreen screen or a polished formal hedge.

The name Lucidum is Latin for “shining” or “bright,” which perfectly describes the mirror-like finish of its leaves. In late winter, it produces clusters of tiny pink-to-white flowers that eventually transform into metallic, cobalt-blue berries, providing a vital food source for garden birds.
