Growing Conditions – Thai Bird’s Eye Chilli (Capsicum annuum)
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun. Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering and fruit production.
Temperature & Climate:
Prefers warm to hot conditions. Ideal temperatures range between 20–32°C. Protect from frost and cold drafts, as low temperatures slow growth and reduce yield.
Watering:
Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as it can cause root rot.
Soil Needs:
Grows best in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost. A sandy-loam or loamy soil with good drainage is ideal. Maintain a pH of 6.0–6.8.
Humidity:
Tolerates moderate humidity. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
Feeding:
Fertilise every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced or high-potassium fertiliser to support flowering and fruiting.
Growth Habit & Size:
A compact, bushy chilli variety reaching 40–90 cm tall. Produces abundant small, upright, hot chillies.
Pot/Container Growing:
Ideal for containers. Use a 20–30 cm pot with good drainage. Repot when root-bound to maintain healthy growth.
Special Care:
Mulch lightly to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Remove early flowers on young plants to encourage stronger branching.
Support is optional but useful for heavy fruiting.
Harvesting:
Fruits can be harvested when green for a fresh, sharp heat or left to ripen to bright red for maximum flavour and spice.
