Description

Common Name: Box Honeysuckle (also known as Wilson’s Honeysuckle or Boxleaf Honeysuckle)
Scientific Name: Lonicera nitida
Description
Lonicera nitida is a dense, evergreen shrub with small, glossy dark-green leaves and supple stems that create a neat, mounded or layered “haystack” appearance. It reaches 1.2–1.5 m tall and wide if left unpruned, producing tiny, creamy-white fragrant flowers in late spring followed by occasional bluish-purple berries. Perfect for low hedges, topiary, ground cover, or adding year-round structure to borders and containers.
Growing Conditions
Light: Full sun to partial shade (including quite deep shade); performs well in a wide range of light conditions.
Water: Moderate; water regularly while establishing, then fairly drought tolerant once rooted — keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil; adapts to light (sandy), medium (loamy), or heavy (clay) soils and a range of pH levels (mildly acid to mildly alkaline). Avoid constantly wet or boggy conditions.
Temperature: Hardy to around -15°C; thrives in warm to cool temperate climates and tolerates light frost.
Humidity: Adapts well to average garden humidity; tolerant of both dry and more humid conditions.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring; mulch with organic matter to retain moisture and nourish the soil.
Why We Love Them
We love Lonicera nitida for its incredible versatility and forgiving nature — it’s one of the easiest evergreen shrubs to grow, shaping beautifully into crisp hedges or whimsical topiary with just a few clips a year. Its glossy leaves stay vibrant all year, the tiny fragrant flowers add a sweet surprise in spring, and it brings reliable structure and texture to gardens with almost zero fuss, making it a true favorite for busy gardeners and stylish landscapes alike.
