Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT
Full sun — minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight daily; struggles and becomes leggy in partial shade
WATERING
Water deeply once every 7–10 days during summer, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings; reduce to once every 3–4 weeks in winter; avoid overhead watering and wetting the foliage
SOIL TYPE
Well-draining, sandy or gravelly loam with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH of 6.5–7.5; amend heavy clay soils generously with coarse river sand and fine gravel to prevent root rot
TEMPERATURE
-10°C to 38°C — tolerates mild frost once established; performs best between 15°C and 30°C; may struggle through prolonged humid subtropical summers without excellent drainage and airflow
HUMIDITY
Prefers low to moderate humidity; high humidity encourages fungal disease — ensure good air circulation, especially in summer rainfall regions of South Africa
FERTILISING
Apply a low-nitrogen, phosphorus-rich granular fertiliser (e.g. 3:1:5 or similar) once in early spring; avoid high-nitrogen feeds which promote lush foliage at the expense of flowers
GROWTH RATE
Moderate — typically reaches flowering size within one growing season; establishes quickly in well-draining conditions
