Description
Kniphofia praecox (Greater Red-hot Poker, Torch Lily, Vuurpyl) is a bold, clump-forming evergreen perennial from South Africa. It produces large clumps of strap-like grayish-green leaves and tall stems topped with dense, fiery racemes of tubular flowers that open scarlet-red, then mature to orange and yellow from the base up.
Why We Love It
We love its dramatic “torch” display that brings intense, long-lasting colour when many plants are fading. It’s tough, low-maintenance, architectural, and a magnet for sunbirds, bees and butterflies. In South Africa it shines especially in autumn and winter, delivering reliable wow-factor with almost no effort.
Cultivation and Care
Light: Full sun for best flowering.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil; avoid winter waterlogging.
Water: Moderate while establishing; drought-tolerant once mature.
Planting: Spring, spaced 45–60 cm apart. Great for borders, mass plantings, coastal or gravel gardens.
Maintenance: Deadhead spent spikes; cut back old leaves in spring; divide every 3–4 years. Generally pest-free and deer-resistant.
Landscape Uses
Excellent as a focal point or in mixed borders. Pairs well with grasses. Flowers are good for cutting.
