Hypericum (St John’s Wort)
Hypericum is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub prized for its bright golden-yellow flowers and colourful berries. It flowers from late spring through summer, attracting bees and other pollinators, while the ornamental berries provide interest well into autumn. It’s an excellent choice for borders, cottage gardens, and mass planting.
Growing Conditions:
Sun: Full sun to partial shade (flowers best in full sun).
Water: Water regularly while establishing, then only occasionally once established. Fairly drought tolerant.
Soil: Well-drained soil; adapts to most soil types.
Height: 60 cm–1.2 m (depending on variety).
Spread: 60 cm–1.2 m.
Frost: Tolerates light to moderate frost.
Care: Prune lightly after flowering or in late winter to encourage bushy growth and abundant blooms. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring for the best flowering.
Best for Western Cape Gardens:
Excellent for Mediterranean climates, thriving in the Western Cape’s warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. It performs well in water-wise gardens once established.
