Hydrangea – Growing Conditions

Light Requirements:
Hydrangeas grow best in partial shade. Morning sun with protection from the hot afternoon sun is ideal. Too much direct light may scorch leaves or reduce flowering.

Watering:
Requires regular, deep watering to keep the soil consistently moist. Water 2–3 times weekly during warm months. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Soil Type:
Prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.

Slightly acidic soil produces blue flowers.

Neutral to alkaline soil produces pink flowers.

Temperature & Climate:
Thrives in mild to warm climates. Protect from harsh afternoon heat and strong winds. Performs well in coastal and sheltered garden spots.

Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in midsummer to support lush foliage and abundant blooms.

Mature Size:
Most varieties form rounded shrubs reaching 1–2.5 m tall and wide, depending on the cultivar.

Flowering:
Blooms from spring through late summer with large, showy flower clusters in shades of pink, blue, purple, or white.

Maintenance:

Prune after flowering (for varieties blooming on old wood).

Remove dead or weak stems anytime.

Mulch yearly to enrich soil and maintain even moisture.
