Description
Elkhorn Fern – Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can burn the fronds.
Water:
Water when the mount or potting medium is nearly dry. Soak thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain. Elkhorns absorb moisture through their fronds as well—mist during hot, dry periods.
Soil / Mounting:
Often grown mounted on wood or in hanging baskets with sphagnum moss and orchid bark. If potted, use a very well-draining, airy mix.
Temperature:
Thrives in 15–28°C. Protect from frost and cold winds.
Humidity:
Enjoys moderate to high humidity, similar to its natural tropical habitat. Mist regularly in dry climates.
Fertiliser:
Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Do not overfeed—Elkhorns prefer minimal nutrition.
Growth Habit:
Produces two types of fronds:
Shield fronds that wrap around the base for protection.
Elkhorn (antler) fronds that grow outward in branching shapes.
Makes a striking, sculptural statement indoors or outdoors in shaded areas.
Care Tips:
Do not remove the brown, papery shield fronds—they are normal and protective.
Ensure good airflow around the plant.
Avoid letting it sit in waterlogged conditions.
