Description
Dietes bicolor – Yellow African Iris
Tough, graceful, and endlessly rewarding
Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. More sun encourages more blooms.
Water: Low to moderate water needs. Drought-tolerant once established, but performs best with occasional deep watering.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil but tolerates a range of soil types, including clay. Performs well in poor or sandy soils if drainage is adequate.
Climate: Hardy and adaptable. Handles heat, humidity, coastal conditions, and light frost.
Growth Habit: A clumping, evergreen perennial with sword-like, arching leaves. Produces elegant pale yellow flowers with dark purple-brown markings from spring through autumn. Grows 60–90 cm tall and spreads steadily to form bold clumps.
Uses: Ideal for mass planting, borders, waterwise gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes. Excellent along pathways, around pools, or in containers.
Care Tips: Remove spent flower stems and divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate. Feed annually with a slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
