Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT
Full sun, minimum 6-8 hours direct sunlight daily
WATERING
Water deeply once or twice weekly during active growth, allowing soil to dry between waterings; reduce to fortnightly in winter
SOIL TYPE
Well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with moderate fertility; tolerates poor soils but avoid heavy clay
TEMPERATURE
5–35 °C, frost-hardy to approximately -5 °C once established
HUMIDITY
Low to moderate; thrives in South Africa’s drier climates and is drought-tolerant once established
FERTILISING
Apply balanced slow-release fertiliser (3:1:5) once in early spring; avoid over-fertilising which promotes foliage over flowers
GROWTH RATE
Fast – establishes quickly and blooms within 10-12 weeks from seed, often flowering the first season

Coreopsis grandiflora flowers contain natural yellow dyes that Native Americans historically used to colour textiles, and the genus name derives from the Greek ‘koris’ meaning bedbug, because the seeds remarkably resemble tiny insects in both shape and colour.
