Description
🌺 Bougainvillea – Growing Conditions
Light:
Bougainvillea loves full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for vibrant blooms. The more sun it gets, the better it flowers.
Soil:
Plant in well-draining soil. A sandy or loamy mix works best. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain too much water.
Water:
Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Bougainvillea prefers being a bit on the dry side once established.
Temperature:
Thrives in warm climates and tolerates heat very well. Protect from frost and cold winds.
Fertilizer:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced or high-potassium fertilizer to encourage flowering. Avoid too much nitrogen as it promotes leaves instead of blooms.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and promote new growth.
Fun Fact:
Did you know? The bright “flowers” of bougainvillea are actually colourful bracts — the real flowers are the tiny white ones in the centre!
