Description
Bush Pearl Pink Kangaroo Paw
Anigozanthos ‘Bush Pearl’
Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT
Full sun for at least 6 hours daily; tolerates light afternoon shade in hot inland areas
WATERING
Twice weekly in summer, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings; reduce to once weekly in winter. Water at the base, avoiding wetting foliage to prevent ink spot disease
SOIL TYPE
Well-draining sandy or loam soil with added compost; slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Excellent drainage is essential as plants are prone to root rot
TEMPERATURE
5–35°C; frost-tender and requires protection below 2°C
HUMIDITY
Low to moderate humidity; prefers drier conditions similar to its native Western Australian habitat
FERTILISING
Monthly from spring to autumn with a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser; avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers which can cause toxicity
GROWTH RATE
Moderate; reaches flowering size within 12–18 months from planting, with peak flowering in spring and summer
MATURE SIZE
0.6–0.8 metres height x 0.5–0.6 metres spread
Indoor Suitability
Can be grown indoors in a very bright spot near a sunny window, but performs best outdoors where it receives direct sunlight and good air circulation. Indoor specimens often become leggy and flower less prolifically than garden-grown plants.
Did You Know?
The fuzzy texture of kangaroo paw flowers comes from dense velvety hairs called trichomes that serve a dual purpose: they protect the flower from Australia’s intense UV radiation while also creating a perfect landing platform that guides bird pollinators’ beaks directly into the nectar-rich tubular flowers.
