Description
Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily) – Growing Conditions
Light Requirements:
Alstroemeria thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hot climates, light afternoon shade helps prolong flowering and prevents heat stress.
Soil Needs:
Well-draining, fertile soil is essential. Alstroemeria prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Add compost or organic matter to improve soil structure.
Watering:
Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which may cause root rot.
Temperature & Climate:
Grows best in mild to warm climates. Protect from frost and extreme heat. In cooler areas, mulch to protect roots during winter.
Fertilizing:
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing and blooming season to encourage strong growth and flowering.
Maintenance:
Deadhead spent flowers to promote continuous blooming.
Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Alstroemeria may spread via underground rhizomes; divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor.
Pot & Nursery Care:
Ideal for pots and containers. Use a high-quality potting mix with good drainage. Repot or divide when crowded to ensure healthy root development.
