Growing Conditions
SUNLIGHT
Partial shade to full shade; tolerates morning sun but foliage colour intensifies in shadier positions
WATERING
Water 2-3 times weekly during establishment and hot summer months; reduce to weekly once established. Prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil
SOIL TYPE
Rich, well-draining loam with high organic matter; tolerates clay soils if drainage is adequate
TEMPERATURE
-10°C to 30°C; frost hardy but may suffer leaf scorch above 32°C without adequate moisture
HUMIDITY
Moderate to high humidity preferred; thrives in South Africa’s summer rainfall regions and Cape winter rainfall areas with supplemental watering
FERTILISING
Apply slow-release balanced fertiliser (3:1:5) in early spring; supplement with liquid organic feed monthly during active growth (September to March)
GROWTH RATE
Fast-spreading groundcover; can cover 1 square metre within one growing season under optimal conditions
MATURE SIZE
0.1–0.15 m height x 0.6–0.9 m spread per plant

The deep mahogany-bronze foliage produces a natural allelopathic compound that suppresses weed germination around it, making it an excellent living mulch that does double duty as both ornamental groundcover and natural weed suppressant in shaded garden beds
