Monstera deliciosa — Delicious Monster
Indoor / Outdoor: Both. Best indoors in bright, indirect light; outdoors in a warm, sheltered position with filtered or morning sun.
Sun: Bright, indirect light to partial shade. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2–5 cm of soil feels dry. Allow excess water to drain and avoid waterlogged soil. Reduce watering in cooler months.
Soil: Rich, fertile and well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A loose, chunky mix is ideal.
Height: 2–5 m when mature, depending on support and growing conditions.
Width: 1–3 m or more; allow plenty of space for its large leaves and climbing habit.
Growth: Fast-growing, climbing perennial. Provide a moss pole, trellis or other sturdy support for larger plants.
Flowering: Mature outdoor plants may produce creamy-white flowers followed by edible fruit under suitable tropical conditions. Fruit must be fully ripe before eating.
Features: Large, glossy, deeply split leaves with distinctive natural holes. Excellent architectural foliage and a popular tropical statement plant.
Indigenous: No — native to tropical Central America.
Edible: Yes, the mature fruit is edible when completely ripe; unripe fruit can cause irritation and should not be eaten.
Care: Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust. Feed during active growth with a balanced fertiliser. Provide warmth, humidity and good air circulation. Support climbing stems as the plant grows.
Frost: Frost tender. Protect from cold temperatures and frost.
Best for: Indoor feature pots, patios, covered entertainment areas, tropical gardens, shaded courtyards and lush foliage displays.
