Description

The Zamioculcas zamiifolia (commonly known as the ZZ Plant or Zanzibar Gem) is one of the most forgiving and low-maintenance houseplants out there—perfect for beginners.

Quick Care Guide
Light: Thrives in low to medium indirect light—great for offices, bathrooms, or rooms away from windows. It tolerates very low light (even fluorescent) but grows slower. Avoid direct harsh sun, as it can scorch the glossy leaves.

Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant thanks to its thick rhizomes. Water only when the soil is completely dry (every 2-4 weeks, less in winter or low light). Overwatering is the main way to kill it—always err on the dry side. Let it dry out fully between waterings.

Soil & Pot: Use well-draining potting mix (add perlite or sand if needed; cactus mix works well). The 17cm pot is a good size—ZZs prefer being slightly root-bound and don’t need frequent repotting (every 2-3+ years to refresh soil, or when roots crowd heavily).
Temperature & Humidity: Happy in average room temps (18-24°C). It handles dry air fine (no extra humidity needed), but mist occasionally if your indoor heating dries things out in winter.
Fertilizer: Minimal needs—feed lightly (diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer) 3-4 times in spring/summer if you want faster growth. Skip in winter.
Pruning & Maintenance: Rarely needed. Remove any yellowing leaves at the base (normal as older ones die off). Wipe dust off glossy leaves for best shine.
Pests/Diseases: Very resistant. Watch for root rot from overwatering; pests are rare indoors.
Toxicity: Toxic if ingested (sap can irritate)—keep away from pets and small kids.
