Growing Information
Position / Sunlight:
Thrives in warm, humid climates.
Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily), but can tolerate partial shade.
Relatively low-maintenance in the right climate.
Soil:
Prefers well-draining soil with slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
Sandy loam or loamy soils enriched with organic matter are ideal.
Watering:
Drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from regular watering during dry periods, flowering, and fruiting.
Keep soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Mulching:
Apply 2–5 cm of organic mulch (e.g., pine bark) to retain moisture, maintain pH, and protect roots.
Keep mulch away from the stem to prevent rot or infection.
Fertilising:
Fertilise regularly with a balanced or slow-release “all plant” fertiliser to support growth and fruiting.
Pruning:
Annual pruning maintains shape, removes dead or diseased branches, improves airflow, and encourages fruit production.
Pollination:
Primarily insect-pollinated (beetles and flies).
Self-pollinating, but cross-pollination improves fruit set. Plant multiple trees for best results.
Pests & Diseases:
Use EM Control preventatively for pests like aphids, scale insects, fruit flies, and diseases such as powdery mildew or fruit rot.
For existing problems, hose down affected areas and apply EM Control regularly.
Harvesting:
Ready when fruit turns green to yellow and yields slightly to gentle pressure.
Handle carefully to avoid bruising.
