Description
🌿 Melianthus major (Honey Bush) – Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil. It thrives in compost-rich ground and does best in slightly sandy or loamy soils.
Watering: Moderate water needs. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance.
Temperature: Frost tender – protect young plants from cold. In mild climates it remains evergreen; in colder areas it may die back in winter and regrow in spring.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing perennial shrub, reaching 2–3 m tall and wide. Prune back after flowering or frost to encourage fresh new shoots.
Flowers: Tall spikes of dark red to brownish flowers in late winter to spring, rich in nectar and highly attractive to birds and pollinators.
Uses: Excellent feature plant for gardens, wildlife gardens, and coastal areas. Adds dramatic texture with its bold, grey-green foliage.
