Description
Giant Sword Fern (Nephrolepis biserrata)
Lush tropical foliage with bold impact
The Giant Sword Fern is a dramatic, fast-growing fern known for its large, arching fronds that can reach up to 1.5–2 metres long. A perfect choice for creating a tropical or woodland look, it thrives in warm, humid conditions and adds rich green texture to shaded garden beds, containers, or as a lush groundcover.
Growing Conditions:
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. Can tolerate full shade but growth may slow. Avoid harsh midday sun which can scorch fronds.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Enjoys humidity—mist regularly or plant in a naturally humid area.
Soil: Requires well-draining, rich, loamy soil with good organic content.
Temperature: Thrives in warm, frost-free climates. Protect from temperatures below 5°C.
Humidity: High humidity is ideal—great for coastal or subtropical gardens.
Feeding: Light feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
Landscaping Tips:
Use as a dramatic filler in shaded borders, under trees, or as a tropical background. Also does well in large pots or hanging baskets in protected areas.
