Description
Columnea Hirta — commonly known as the Goldfish Plant — is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its cascading stems and bright, tubular orange-red flowers that resemble leaping goldfish. Native to Central and South America, it’s a wonderful choice for hanging baskets or high shelves, where its trailing habit and vivid blooms can shine.🌺 Plant Description
Columnea hirta is an epiphytic perennial with velvety, deep green leaves and arching stems that can grow up to 1 m long. From late winter through summer, it produces numerous small, vivid flowers that seem to pop out of the foliage like tiny swimming goldfish — adding a cheerful splash of color indoors or in a sheltered outdoor area.
🌿 Growing Conditions
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Too little light will reduce flowering.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
Humidity: Prefers high humidity — mist regularly or place near a humidifier, especially in dry indoor air.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions between 18–27 °C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 12 °C.
Soil: Use a light, well-draining mix — such as an orchid mix blended with peat and perlite.
Fertiliser: Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser for flowering houseplants. Stop feeding in winter.
✂️ Care Tips
Pinch back stems after flowering to encourage bushier growth.
Remove spent blooms to promote continuous flowering.
Repot every 2–3 years in spring if roots become crowded.
