Description
Centradenia floribunda “Spanish Shawl” is a striking, low-growing evergreen perennial (commonly used as a trailing ground cover) from the Melastomataceae family. Native to Mexico and parts of Central America, it’s loved for its bold contrast: deep bronze to reddish-purple or chocolate-toned foliage combined with abundant vivid magenta-pink to rose-purple, four-petaled flowers.
The small blooms appear in profusion, often blanketing the plant in bright pink (especially during cooler months like fall and winter in mild climates), though it can flower for much of the year under good conditions. The rich, dark leaves provide strong year-round interest and intensify in brighter light.
Its sprawling, cascading growth makes it ideal for:
Spilling over walls, containers, or hanging baskets
Serving as colorful ground cover on banks or in borders
Adding vibrant pops in rock gardens or mixed beds
It typically grows about 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) tall and spreads 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) or more as it trails and roots along the stems.
Growing Tips
Light — Full sun to partial shade. Brighter light enhances the leaf color and increases flowering; too much shade reduces blooms and vibrancy.
Water — Regular moisture while establishing, then moderate to low once settled. It’s fairly drought-tolerant in mild areas but prefers even moisture without waterlogging.
Soil — Well-drained, average to fertile garden soil. Excellent drainage is essential.
Maintenance — Fast-growing and easy. Pinch or trim tips for denser growth and after flowering periods to keep it neat. Propagates readily from stem cuttings.
Pests/Diseases — Generally low-maintenance and trouble-free.
