Calathea zebrina – Growing Conditions

Light Requirements
Calathea zebrina thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun as it can scorch the leaves and fade their vibrant zebra-like patterns. It also adapts well to medium-light indoor spaces.

Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Use room-temperature, filtered, or rainwater where possible, as this plant is sensitive to salts and chlorine.

Humidity
Requires high humidity (60–80%) to keep leaves lush and prevent browning edges. Ideal for bathrooms or kitchens, or boost humidity with a humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping with other plants.

Temperature
Prefers warm conditions between 18–27 °C. Protect from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and anything below 15 °C.

Soil
Grows best in a light, airy, fast-draining mix rich in organic matter. A blend containing peat or coco coir, fine bark, and perlite or pumice ensures ideal moisture retention without waterlogging.

Fertiliser
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Growth Habit
A clump-forming, compact indoor plant with large velvety leaves featuring bold striped patterns. Typically reaches 45–60 cm tall indoors.

Care Notes
Wipe leaves occasionally to enhance photosynthesis. Rotate the plant monthly for even growth. Sensitive to fluoride and overwatering—ensure proper drainage and avoid harsh tap water.
