Description

Etrog Citron (Citrus medica)

The Etrog citron is a fragrant and highly prized citrus fruit, particularly significant in Jewish traditions, where it is used during the festival of Sukkot. Its thick, bumpy rind and bright yellow color make it stand out among other citruses, though it is less commonly consumed for its pulp. The Etrog tree can serve as both a fruit-bearing tree and a unique ornamental addition to your garden.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sunlight: The Etrog citron thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil: It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Sandy or loamy soils work best.
  • Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering once a week is ideal, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Temperature: Being a subtropical tree, the Etrog citron prefers warm temperatures (above 20°C/68°F). It is sensitive to frost, so protect it during cold spells or consider growing it in containers that can be brought indoors.
  • Fertilization: Feed the tree with a balanced citrus fertilizer every 6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Pruning: Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape and remove dead or weak branches.
  • Pests/Diseases: Watch for common citrus pests like aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Ensure good airflow around the tree to prevent fungal diseases.

Uses: While Etrog citron is not commonly eaten as is, its thick rind is often used for making candied citron or preserved in syrup. In addition to its culinary uses, it plays a significant ceremonial role in religious rituals.
