🌼 Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) – Growing Conditions
Sun: Full sun to light shade; best flowering with 6+ hours of sunlight daily.
Water: Moderate watering. Keep soil evenly moist while establishing, but avoid waterlogging. Once established, moderately drought tolerant.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
Height: ±60–90 cm
Width: ±40–60 cm
Growth: Upright, clump-forming perennial with strong flowering stems.
Flowering: Summer, producing large white daisy flowers with bright yellow centres. Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms.
Features: Long-lasting cut flowers, attractive to bees and butterflies, and excellent for cottage-style gardens.
Indigenous: No – not indigenous to South Africa.
Edible: No – grown primarily as an ornamental.
Care: Feed during the growing season and remove spent flowers regularly. Cut back after flowering to maintain a neat shape. Divide established clumps every few years if they become overcrowded.
Frost: Frost hardy once established; may die back in very cold areas and regrow in spring.
Indoor / Outdoor: Outdoor only – needs good light and air circulation.
Best for: Borders, cottage gardens, containers, mass planting and cut-flower gardens.
