Lobelia speciosa – Growing Conditions
Sun: Full sun to partial shade. Best with morning sun and some afternoon protection in very hot climates.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering. Do not allow the roots to remain waterlogged.
Soil: Rich, fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
Height: 30–60 cm
Width: 30–45 cm
Growth: Upright, bushy perennial with attractive foliage and tall flowering stems.
Flowering: Summer to autumn, producing showy spikes of colourful flowers.
Features: Long flowering season, colourful blooms, excellent for borders and containers, and attractive to bees and butterflies.
Indoor / Outdoor: Outdoor – best grown in bright, well-lit garden positions.
Indigenous: No – Lobelia speciosa is not indigenous to South Africa.
Edible: No – not grown as an edible plant.
Care: Feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming and cut back after flowering if needed.
Frost: Protect from severe frost. In colder areas, grow in a sheltered position and protect the crown during winter.
Best for: Cottage gardens, borders, containers, mass planting and pollinator-friendly gardens.
