Portulacaria afra
Sun: Full sun to light shade; best growth with plenty of sunlight.
Water: Low water needs once established. Allow soil to dry between watering.
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Height: 2–4 m, but can be kept smaller with pruning.
Width: 1.5–3 m.
Growth: Fast-growing, branching succulent shrub.
Flowering: Small pink flowers, mainly in late winter to spring under favourable conditions.
Features: Drought tolerant, hardy, evergreen, excellent carbon-storing plant, and easy to shape.
Indigenous: 🇿🇦 Yes – indigenous to South Africa.
Edible: 🌱 Yes – leaves are edible and have a fresh, slightly sour flavour; traditionally used in salads and cooking.
Care: Prune regularly to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Protect from prolonged wet conditions.
Frost: Protect from severe frost.
Best for: Waterwise gardens, rockeries, succulent gardens, hedging, containers and erosion control.
