Chamaedorea elegans – Parlour Palm
Indoor / Outdoor: Best indoors or in a sheltered, shaded outdoor position. Protect from harsh sun, wind and cold.
Sun: Bright, indirect light to light shade. Avoid strong direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in cooler months.
Soil: Well-draining, fertile potting soil. A mix containing compost and good drainage material works well.
Height: 1–2 m indoors; can reach around 2–3 m in ideal outdoor conditions.
Width: 60–100 cm.
Growth: Slow-growing, clumping palm with elegant, slender stems and soft, arching green fronds.
Features: Excellent air-purifying indoor plant; attractive, low-maintenance palm that tolerates lower light than many other palms.
Indigenous: No – native to southern Mexico and Guatemala.
Edible: No – not grown as an edible plant.
Care: Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer. Avoid cold draughts and sudden changes in temperature.
Frost: Not frost hardy. Protect from temperatures below 10°C.
Best for: Indoor pots, offices, bedrooms, living areas, shaded patios and sheltered courtyards.
